Max Duggan

 

In 2022, TCU senior Max Duggan became the first Horned Frog to win the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award named after the former TCU star. It was the third time that a TCU player was a finalist for the nation’s oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award.

Duggan steered the Horned Frogs, a team picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 Conference during the preseason, to an appearance in the National Championship Game and a 13-2 overall record. Against then-No. 2 Michigan in the College Football Playoff Semifinal, he accounted for four total touchdowns and 287 yards of offense in a 51-45 victory over the heavily-favored Wolverines.

On the year, the native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, completed 267 of 419 passes (63.7 percent) for 3,698 yards and 32 touchdowns. In addition, he rushed 137 times for 423 yards and nine touchdowns. TCU finished the season with seven comeback wins.

The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and unanimous first-team all-conference selection ranked seventh in points responsible for (248), tied for 10th in passing touchdowns (32), 12th in passing yards (3,698), 12th in yards per pass attempt (8.8), 13th in passing yards per completion (13.9) and 16th in passing efficiency (159.2).

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal caller directed one of the nation’s most prolific offenses, as TCU finished the year ranked ninth in the NCAA in scoring offense at 38.8 points per game. Duggan was the ninth straight Davey O’Brien Award recipient to lead his team to the College Football Playoffs and the seventh in that group to play in the national title game.

Duggan also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in 2022. Additionally, he was the Heisman Trophy runner up, the highest finish by a Horned Frog player since Jim Swink in 1955.
