UCLA’s Iamaleava Voted Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 7, 2025) – UCLA sophomore Nico Iamaleava has been named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for his efforts in the Bruins’ 42-37 upset win over No. 7 Penn State. He is the second quarterback from the Big Ten Conference to win the honor in the past three weeks.

Iamaleava was responsible for all five of the Bruins’ touchdowns and 294 yards of total offense against the Nittany Lions. In all, he completed 17 of 24 passes (70.8 percent) for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also had a team-high and career-best 128 rushing yards and a school-quarterback-record three scores on 16 rushes (8.0 yards per carry). He finished with a 97.4 total quarterback rating.

Iamaleava also was named both the Associated Press National Player of the Week and the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week. The Bruins’ first victory of the season also snapped a 16-game losing streak to teams ranked among the AP top 10.

The other quarterbacks on this week’s Great 8 list were Carson Beck (Miami), Blake Horvath (Navy), DJ Lagway (Florida), Jaylen Raynor (Arkansas State), Julian Sayin (Ohio State), Ty Simpson (Alabama) and Brendan Sorsby (Cincinnati).

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
