Record-Breaker Mestemaker Named Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week
FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 28, 2025) – Following a record-setting performance on Friday, North Texas redshirt freshman Drew Mestemaker has been selected as the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week.
Mestemaker shattered North Texas and American Conference records by throwing for 608 yards in a 54-20 win over Charlotte. In the process, he became the 22nd player ever to throw for at least 600 yards in a FBS game and the first since 2020. His single-game yardage total ranks 16th all time. On the night, the product of Austin, Texas, completed 37 of 49 attempts (.755) with four touchdown passes.
Mestemaker was also named the Associated Press National Offensive Player of the Week and the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He is the first American Conference player to win the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week Award this season.
The other quarterbacks on this week’s Great 8 list were Joey Aguilar of Tennessee, BYU’s Bear Bachmeier, Haynes King of Georgia Tech, Memphis’ Brendon Lewis, Marcel Reed of Texas A&M, Houston’s Conner Weigman and Demond Williams Jr. of Washington.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
