Oklahoma State’s Mestemaker Tabbed Quarterback of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 15, 2026) – Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestemaker has been voted the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for week two following his play in the Cowboys’ 39-31 upset win over No. 6 Oregon.

The sophomore from Austin, Texas, amassed 426 yards of total offense and three touchdowns against the Ducks. Through the air, he was 26-for-43 (.605) for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried six times for a career-high 109 yards (18.2 yards per carry) and a score.

The Cowboys were 24 1/2-point underdogs and ended a 21-game losing streak against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents and a 12-game overall losing skid.

For his efforts, Mestemaker was also named the Associated Press Player of the Week and the Big 12 Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

The other quarterbacks on this week’s Great 8 list were Bear Bachmeier of BYU, Utah’s Devon Dampier, JJ Kohl of FIU, Missouri’s Austin Simmons, Kamario Taylor of Mississippi State, South Florida’s Michael Van Buren Jr. and Caden Veltkamp of Florida Atlantic.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary season this year. The National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981.

Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.4 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.
