Indiana’s Mendoza Named Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week
FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 23, 2025) – Indiana junior Fernando Mendoza has been named the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for his efforts in the Hoosiers’ dominant 63-10 victory over No. 9 Illinois.
Mendoza completed 91.3 percent of his passes (21-for-23) for 267 yards and a career-high-tying five touchdowns on Saturday. He connected on his final 17 pass attempts and led the Hoosiers to touchdowns on six consecutive possessions.
In the contest, Indiana set a record for the most points ever by a Big Ten Conference team (63) versus an Associated Press top-10 team. For his efforts, Mendoza also was named the AP National Player of the Week and the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
The other quarterbacks on this week’s Great 8 list were Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, Marshall’s Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, Josh Hoover of TCU, USC’s Jayden Maiava, Dante Moore of Oregon, Virginia’s Chandler Morris and Demond Williams Jr. of Washington.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
