Davey O’Brien Award Names Great 8 Quarterbacks for Week 11

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 12, 2023) — The Davey O’Brien Foundation has announced the quarterbacks named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 list in a wild, record-setting week 11.

The quarterbacks on this week’s list are Jayden Daniels of LSU, Toledo’s Dequan Finn, Dillon Gabriel of Oklahoma, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Bo Nix of Oregon, Illinois’ John Paddock, John Rhys Plumlee of UCF and Liberty’s Kaidon Salter. With three first-time honorees this week, 57 different players have now been recognized in 2023.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week, selected from the Great 8 list, will be announced Tuesday at 11 a.m. (CT).

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.3 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.

Jayden Daniels, LSU, Sr., 6-4, 210, San Bernardino, Calif.

• Became the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 350 yards (372) and rush for more than 200 (234) in a game, and also totaled five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing), in a 52-35 win over Florida.

Dequan Finn, Toledo, Jr., 6-2, 205, Detroit, Mich.

• Completed 23 of 27 passes for a season-high 407 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-23 victory over Eastern Michigan.

Dillon Gabriel, Oklahoma, Sr., 5-11, 204, Mililani, Hawaii

• Set an Oklahoma record by accounting for eight touchdowns (five passing, three rushing) and amassed 473 total yards (423 passing, 50 rushing) in a 59-20 win over West Virginia.

Jalen Milroe, Alabama, So., 6-2, 220, Katy, Texas

• Became the first player in Alabama history to score three passing and three rushing touchdowns in a game during a 49-21 victory over Kentucky.

Bo Nix, Oregon, Sr., 6-2, 217, Pinson, Ala.

• Finished 23-for-31 through the air for 412 yards and four touchdowns against no interceptions as Oregon downed USC, 36-27.

John Paddock, Illinois, Sr., 6-0, 190, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

• Threw for 507 yards, the second most in school history and the second most in the NCAA this season, while going 24-for-36 with four touchdowns, including the game winner in overtime against Indiana (48-45).

John Rhys Plumlee, UCF, Sr., 6-0, 200, Hattiesburg, Miss.

• Was 11 of 18 for 299 yards (27.2 yards per completion) and three touchdowns, and rushed 14 times for 74 yards in a 45-3 upset over No. 15 Oklahoma State.

Kaidon Salter, Liberty, So., 6-1, 200, Cedar Hill, Texas

• Had five total touchdowns (three rushing, two passing) and 266 total yards (225 passing, 41 rushing) in a 38-10 triumph over Old Dominion.
