Cal’s Sagapolutele Snags Second Davey O’Brien QB of the Week Honor
FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 2, 2025) – California’s Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has secured his second Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week honor in the past four weeks following his performance on Saturday night against nationally-ranked SMU.
Sagapolutele is the first true freshman ever to be so honored by the Davey O’Brien Foundation twice in a season and joins Georgia’s Gunner Stockton as the only players to be recognized multiple times in 2025.
The native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, led Cal to a 38-35 victory over No. 21 SMU by completing 31 of 40 passes (77.5 percent) for a career-high 330 yards and career-best four touchdowns against no interceptions. He also finished with single-game bests in pass efficiency rating (179.8) and QBR (92.9).
In the game, Sagapolutele became only the second FBS player to ever record 200 yards or more passing in each of his first 12 collegiate games. He was also named the Atlantic Coast Conference Quarterback of the Week and ACC Rookie of the Week.
The other quarterbacks on this week’s Great 8 list were USF’s Byrum Brown, Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, TCU’s Josh Hoover, Brad Jackson of Texas State, Louisiana Tech’s Trey Kukuk, Drew Mestemaker of North Texas, and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.4 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
In 1938, O’Brien, who was a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrienAward.com.
