BYU’s Bachmeier Grabs National QB of the Week Honor

FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 20, 2026) – BYU’s Bear Bachmeier has been voted Week 7’s Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week for his all-around performance in a 28-24 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday night.

The sophomore was responsible for all four Cougar touchdowns, scoring in three different ways (two rushing, one passing, one receiving). In doing so, Bachmeier became the first FBS player in 30 years with a rushing, passing and receiving touchdown against an Associated Press top-five opponent in the same game.

Overall, Bachmeier was 23-for-36 (.639) for 224 yards through the air, rushed 13 times for 45 yards and caught one pass for 15 yards. For his play in BYU’s highest-ranked victory since 1990, he was also honored as the AP National Offensive Player of the Week and the Big 12’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

The rest of the Great 8 quarterbacks in week seven were Auburn’s Byrum Brown, Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, West Virginia’s Michael Hawkins Jr., Cale Hellums of Army, Texas State’s Brad Jackson, Sam Leavitt of LSU and Houston’s Conner Weigman.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary season this year. The National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981.

Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.4 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.

In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955.
